The Sermon on the Mount, and all its commands, weren’t given so you’d try to obey them. Jesus said what He did to create despair in His hearers so they’d stop trying (and failing).
It is His unconditional love, agape, that delivers us from the lies of the false self or flesh that keep us in a rut of defeat, trying harder and then failing again, while feeling despair and a sense of condemnation in the process.
Somehow, we feel we must control the future, so that things work out based on a predetermined outcome. But that is not reality. Control of circumstances, people and God is a myth. We can only control our choice in the moment if we focus on the moment.
There is not a person on this planet who does not need unconditional acceptance. The sense that I am accepted, just for who I am, for what I am and for simply being me.
A false sense of safety and security, trusting your abilities to control situations or people is no substitute for a trust and rest in God who loves you with agape love.
