Overcoming the "I AM NOT"

For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power. Colossians 2: 9-10

We are convinced that we are “not,” and we are driven to find a way to “become.”  C. Baxter Kruger, The Great Dance

If you watch enough television, most would agree that advertisements have one goal: to convince you that you are lacking something:

  • A smaller waist, nicer clothes, sleeker car, bigger home, new appliance, etc.  The good news is, they have the answer to complete where you are lacking.

  • If you just buy the new car, new refrigerator, new home, nice clothes, etc. you will be fulfilled and complete.

  • The problem is that all of these things are external to who you are. Completeness can never be found in “something” outside you, but only in an internal reality.

When you look outside yourself, you will suffer from the feeling of “I am NOT”.

I’m not as pretty as she is, I am not as rich as he is, I’m not as smart, I’m not as educated, I’m not as popular, I’m not as successful.  The message of “I am NOT” goes on and on.  When this happens the pain of feeling “I am NOT” drives you to do something about it so you can “become” and thus have an image or identity that defines you as a “someone.”  This cycle leads to an endless pursuit, much like the horse walking toward the carrot he will never catch or eat.

What if you were already everything you needed to be just because of who you are in God’s image and likeness in Christ?

Why not enter into the reality that you are already everything God ever wanted? He created you to participate in this great dance of the Father, Son and Spirit every moment of every day, and it has nothing to do with personal accomplishments or exterior looks.  It is simply the fact that you are His idea and He is pleased with you just as you are.  In other words, you’re not an “I am NOT” you are His loved child in Christ Jesus.

Look inward, to your spirit, for the reality of who you are in union with Christ.

You are “someone” who is loved, cared for and in union with Christ.  Your Papa Father in heaven thinks of you more times than you can count: “How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them!  If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand;” Psalms 139: 17-18a.

Where is your focus?

Is it on outward things or inward realities of your union and oneness with Christ Jesus?  In Him you are complete.  You don’t have to look to someone or something outside yourself ever again to define you or give you worth, your Papa Father has already done that!
